Hyundai Kona (2024)
Hyundai Kona
Hyundai has showcased the 2024 Kona Electric, Limited, and N Line models at the New York International Auto Show, making their debut in North America. The Kona, which is a premium small SUV, comes in different powertrain options, with the all-electric variant leading the pack, providing advanced safety, convenience, and an impressive electric range of 260 miles, as per initial estimates by Hyundai. The second-generation Kona offers one of the most comprehensive product packages in the small SUV category, with a wide range of powertrain options, including an electric and internal combustion engine, and a sporty N Line version. The new Kona will be available at U.S. dealers this summer, and the Kona Electric will arrive in the late fall.
In an unusual move, Hyundai prioritized the electrified powertrain while developing the new Kona platform, aligning with the company's plan to expedite electrification, which includes introducing 11 new Hyundai EVs worldwide by 2030.
“The all-new Kona and Kona Electric continue to build upon our extremely successful first-generation model, with outstanding efficiency, innovative technologies, distinctive styling, and comprehensive safety features,” said José Muñoz, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor North America. “The new Kona Electric represents the next step forward in eco-friendly mobility solutions, a key model in Hyundai’s rapid transition to clean mobility and progress for humanity.”
The all-new Kona retains its distinctive style with a robust, active design and larger dimensions, catering to the needs of active customers of all ages. It comes equipped with innovative technologies and convenience features that ensure a safe, connected, and comfortable ride. Some of the upgrades include dual panoramic display screens measuring 12.3 inches, Hyundai's next-generation infotainment system, Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates, and Digital Key 2 Touch.
The Kona Electric model is powered by a 64.8-kWh battery that is expected to offer a range of up to 260 miles based on Hyundai's preliminary internal testing. The battery can recharge from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 43 minutes using the available 400V fast-charging capability. The standard battery, on the other hand, is estimated to provide approximately 197 miles of range based on initial internal tests.
The all-new model has unique proportions, featuring increased dimensions and interior volume. The length of the Kona internal combustion version is now 171.3 inches, which is 5.7 inches longer, while the wheelbase has increased by 2.3 inches to 104.7 inches. Additionally, the overall width is now 71.9 inches, which is a full inch wider than its predecessor.
EV-driven Exterior Design
Hyundai took an unconventional approach to the development of the 2024 Kona, using an EV-to-ICE development process. This resulted in a futuristic exterior that emphasizes the Kona's unique look, combining sleek and rugged design elements.
The new Kona Electric boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.27, making it aerodynamically efficient without compromising on style. The sculpted wheel arch armor, parametric surfaces, and dynamic chrome lines connecting the belt line to the rear spoiler and center high-mounted stop lamp add character to the vehicle's pure volume. The Electric variant also features a Pixelated Seamless Horizon Lamp and Pixel graphics, adding a unique touch. Furthermore, the Kona offers a range of vivid exterior colors that cater to the diverse lifestyles of a broad spectrum of customers.

Roomier and More Versatile Interior
Hyundai designed the Kona's larger interior space to cater to a wider range of customer lifestyles, thanks to its EV-based universal architecture and upscaled dimensions. The driver-centric front row features a floating horizontal C-Pad and two 12.3-inch panoramic display screens.
The shift-by-wire gear selector has been relocated from the center console to a stalk behind the steering wheel, freeing up space in the open console area. This highlights the Kona's spacious interior, which offers a versatile and comfortable space for driver and passengers. Driver controls have been moved around the steering wheel to make way for a multi-use center console with a rotational cupholder design. Ambient interior lighting options correspond to drive modes, acceleration, or to suit the driver's mood. The second row features a Curveless Bench Seat, allowing maximum rear passenger legroom. Furthermore, a two-stage latching system enables rear seat reclining.
The second-row seat and rear compartment of the new Kona are fully foldable, providing 25.5 cubic feet of rear cargo volume with seatbacks up and 63.7 cubic feet with seatbacks folded down. Loading cargo is now more convenient with the available Smart Power Tailgate that makes accessing cargo space easier.
EV-Specific Features
Kona Electric has several unique features to enhance the driving experience, including battery preconditioning to ensure optimal performance in colder temperatures and a charging port door lamp for visibility at night. Additional features include forward storage, active grille shutters, and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability for charging other electrical equipment. The i-PEDAL driving mode and Smart Regenerative System adjusts regeneration according to traffic conditions. With the bi-directional onboard charger, the V2L function can power devices or charge electrical equipment using the available V2L adapter from the front charging port.
The i-PEDAL feature of the Kona Electric allows drivers to control acceleration, deceleration and stopping using only the accelerator pedal. The Smart Regenerative System adjusts the level of regenerative braking based on real-time traffic flow data for greater efficiency.
Refined and Efficient Internal Combustion Powertrains
Hyundai prioritizes high efficiency for Kona powertrains. Kona has two gasoline powertrain options, including a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Atkinson engine with an estimated 147 horsepower at 6,200 rpm and 132 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,500 rpm. This engine is paired with a Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) to optimize fuel efficiency. The Atkinson cycle design focuses on maximizing the cylinder expansion ratio during the compression stroke to improve efficiency.
The 1.6-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine in the N Line and Limited trims delivers an estimated 190 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,700-4,500 rpm, ensuring smooth acceleration in urban driving. The engine provides low-RPM responsiveness in everyday driving conditions, with peak torque starting at just 1,700 rpm and holding through 4,500 rpm. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that offers excellent efficiency, seamless shifting, and brisk acceleration.
Responsive and Refined Chassis Tuning
Hyundai designed Kona with improved driving dynamics and responsive performance in mind, specifically for various driving conditions in urban and multi-surface areas. Kona's planted stance, resulting from its long wheelbase, short overhangs, and wide track, provides exceptional agility in urban environments, with improved linear stability and ride comfort. Kona's internal combustion models come with a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and a hollow stabilizer bar design. Kona AWD models are equipped with a multi-link rear suspension with stabilizer bar, while FWD models have a refined torsion beam rear axle design. Kona Electric models feature a MacPherson strut front suspension with coil springs and a multi-link rear suspension.
Kona N Line Sporty Variant
The N Line model has many features including bodycolor cladding, 19-inch N Line alloy wheels, N Line rear spoiler, dual-outlet exhaust tips, Bose premium audio, sport seating with red accents, aluminum sport pedals, N Line scuff plates, and black mirrors. The front and rear fascia designs are wing-shaped and aggressive to give a sportier appearance and emphasize a lower stance.
