BMW started production of the first 5 series - E12 back in 1972. Since then BMW release four more models of the 5 series. The second was E28, which was introduced 1982. In 1988 came out the revolutionary E34, which is still driven all over the world. The fourth generation of 5 series is E39, which was released in 1996.
